Turn a long layover into a bonus city break

Travellers treat layovers as dead time to be endured near a charging pillar. But with a little planning, a long connection is a free visit to a city you'd never otherwise see.

The rules of thumb

  • Six hours minimum — two for airport logistics each way leaves a real visit in between.
  • Check the visa first — many hubs allow transit visits; some even run free layover tours.
  • Pack for it — keep a day-kit in your carry-on so you walk out unencumbered.
Pro moveSome airlines let you extend a layover into a multi-day stopover for free. One booking, two holidays.
